Praying for You!

This song is very popular lately, the most requested song on the radio station I listen to.

Personally, I think it is giving the wrong message. The first time I heard this song I thought it was kind of funny but after several listenings I have to think this really is not the kind of message we should be passing out to anyone.

I found a definition of Prayer as

there are different forms of prayer such as petitionary prayer, prayers of supplication, thanksgiving, and worship/praise. Prayer may be directed towards a deity, spirit, deceased person, or lofty idea, for the purpose of worshiping, requesting guidance, requesting assistance, confessing sins or to express one’s thoughts and emotions. Thus, people pray for many reasons such as personal benefit or for the sake of others.

The song seems to fit the definition, I have a hard time with people praying for harm to others, when everything I’d been taught in church is to pray for self-help, good things for others, and give your thanks/worship to your God.

And seriously, would whatever God you follow listen to you pray for harm to someone, to actully let it happen? Some say this is what the Muslim/Islam Allah allows, others say no God would allow it.

What do you think?

I can see where you would take this song as a message that its ok to hurt people. But I think your reading into it far more than what its intended. First off its just a song. I mean there are far worse things on television. This song is about someone who was deeply hurt by the one they loved. This is their way of showing that hurt and confusion. I mean really who hasnt thought for something to go bad to an ex? If they tell you no then they are lying. I will be the first to admit that question. I think the song was meant to be something for people to laugh at and not take it to serious. If we did that, we would have to look at other songs that talk about hating people or hurting them or theirselves for that matter. I have had several people say they think the song sucks. I think its just plain funny. The people who helped record it and the radio stations who play it must of thought it was good enough or it wouldnt of even gotten the air time it has. I think this song is pretty calm compared to some of the songs I have heard before.

Imprecatory prayers do not fit into Christianity. And in the Old Testament, I believe that imprecatory prayers violate the commandment not to take the Lord thy God’s name in vain.

Imprecatory prayers may not fit into Christianity but it sure is used a lot. A group of people were praying for the harm of Democrats when voting on the HCR. They were severly shocked when a Republican fell ill instead, they thought their prayers back-fired.

Either way, regarless of religion affiliation, I don’t think praying for the harm of another is appropriate, no matter the circumstance. I still don’t care too much for this song.

  4. Religion can be, and has been agrued for centuries. Who really cares about this song? Not really sure what politics have to do with it. Seperation of church and state and all.

One day we all will be held accountable.

    As for this song..IT’S A SONG..FOR ENTERTAINMENT..Kinda like wrestling,,if you beleive it’s real..Your a dumbass…

    • ckelpin says:

Separation of church and state only means the government cannot force, recommend, or prevent a person from practicing whatever religion they want to.
It does not prevent religious people from participating in government activities, or becoming congressmen, senators, presidents, etc.

My blog on the song was to indicate I didn’t like what the song was saying, or that he felt better because he was praying for harm to befall another (regardless of the relationship or circumstance of the other involved). I think a lot of people out there, if not already praying for harm to others, will do so after listening to this silly song. What one person takes for entertainment another takes for real life commitment. Wrestling – not sure of your comment on that other than yes, it is promoted as sports entertainment. Anything else is false. Don’t know that I would call them a dumbass though, not right to call someone names because of a belief they have. That’s were bullies get started.

A prayer for harm may not count as “valid prayer” in most religions, doesn’t prevent people from doing it. Still, it doesn’t seem right.

      Just my opinion.

I’ll try to be clearer in what I’m writing about.
